Acting
as an intermediary between the State Adult Basic Education (ABE) Staff and the
County ABE Director and ABE instructional personnel is the Regional Adult
Education Coordinator. Although specific responsibilities vary, in general the
positions have many similarities. The Regional Coordinators attempt to be
visible in the counties for which they are responsible, visiting full-time and
half-time programs regularly and part-time programs annually or on an
as-needed basis. Technical assistance offered by the Regional Coordinator
ranges from the initial proposal for funding through the compilation of the
registration or 400 forms from each program at the end of the fiscal year.
Teachers are offered assistance with report procedures which are forwarded to
the Regional Coordinator on a monthly basis which are in turn compiled for the
region and forwarded to the State. In addition, the Regional Coordinator will
advise instructors on teaching techniques, student learning styles, classroom
groupings, curriculum offerings, assessments, and publishing companies. The
Regional Coordinator informs the county staff on recent developments and
trends from both state and national sources. Often the Regional Adult
Education Coordinator attends meeting and in-services designed for instructors
and passes the information to the instructors unable to attend the training.
The regional coordinator maintains linkages with local projects related to the
ABE program including the education system, libraries, literacy providers,
community-based organizations, and county programs like the Family Resource
Networks.
Every four years the State Adult Basic Education Staff reviews the county
programs in an On-Site Review. The Regional Coordinator prepares the county
staff by an in-service and a series of visits to the county sites to either
prepare a preliminary checklist for the audit review or advises program
personnel for a full audit. In both situations, the Regional Coordinator
accompanies the reviewers to the various program site. Regional Coordinators
meet with State staff quarterly and relay the information received back to the
county programs.
Since every ABE instructor is required to participate in a minimum of three
hours of approved in-service offerings, the Regional Coordinator offers a
variety of sessions conveniently located for the county personnel. In
addition, the Regional Coordinator compiles and updates the information on
both instructors and class offerings in the region.
Thus, the Regional Adult Education Coordinator performs a variety of tasks for
both the counties and the State.
